This afternoon we met up with Olivia's friends Hannah and Nicole and Sofia's friends Isabella and Milani to go see the musical Once Upon a Mattress at Heritage High School. I first saw the musical poster on the window of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, where we go every Wednesday after picking Sofia up from choir practice and before the girls go to gymnastics. When Sofia was 4 and Olivia was just a tiny baby, we took the girls to the Beauty and the Beast musical at Southlake High School and were shocked at the quality of the musical. They actually ended up using real fireworks throughout the musical, so I ended up spending most of the time out in the lobby with a crying Olivia. She used to be really fearful of loud noises, especially when she was a baby.
Anyway, based on that surprisingly good production, I texted the girls' moms to see if they would be interested in going with us. All morning the girls stayed in the pjs and jumped on the trampoline, which has become their new daily fun activity. When it was finally time for us to all get ready, I sent the girls to get dressed while I showered and got ready. Sofia threw on her striped skirt and flower shirt, which is one of her favorite outfits and she wears it fairly often. Even though it's only in the low 50s, she is fairly warm natured. Meanwhile, Olivia got dressed up like she was headed to a wedding. She had gold and white tights with her sequined-dress, but she said it was all scratchy, so she changed. She changed into one of my favorites - Sofia's raspberry dress that she wore at Olivia's age for Easter. It looked so absolutely adorable on Olivia. She wore her pink tights and gold sweater with it along with her cute new shoes. They both looked adorable!
The tickets were $10 each and they all agreed! The 2pm show actually offered a 1:30 "tea with the princess" so we decided to meet up early check it out. It ended up being so cool! The entire cast was dressed and standing in front of the stage to meet the girls. Besides our six girls, there were maybe 10 other kids there, so they got a lot of individual attention. After meeting the cast, one of the girls invited the girls up onto the stage so they could explore the castle sets and then they gave them a tour of backstage, showing them the props, costumes, make-up section and explaining how they made the sets. Hannah and Olivia stuck together and Sofia and Isabella were together with another high school girl. Nicole wandered around while Milani sat in her seat in the audience. At one point, one of the actresses sought Milani out and asked if she wanted a tour of the stage and backstage and she agreed. She's very shy and doesn't generally like to participate in things like that, so it was cool to see her go up and enjoy the stage.
The cast took one picture of all the kids before we found our seats and waited for the show to begin. One super cool part of the musical is that there was a live orchestra providing the music in the pit in front of the stage. Our seats were about halfway back in the theater, but it's not a very large theater so the seats were great! The theater was only about half full and I'm pretty sure most of the audience were parents. The show was terrific! The voices, acting and music were really terrific and the girls completely enjoyed it. Hannah, Olivia and Nicole sat together in front of us while Sofia, Isabella and Milani sat together and scarfed down candy the entire time. The musical told the story of the princess and the pea and was clever and funny although there was too much singing in it. We all agreed that a few of the musical numbers could have been skipped, but they were all good. The musical went on for nearly 3 hours with an intermission after about two hours. It was very good but really could have been shorter. Sofia and Olivia really loved it and were totally engaged the whole time. Both girls decided they wanted a king crown as a souvenir (aside from the boxes of candy we bought earlier) and I figured it was for a good cause. It was really a fun musical and afternoon spent with friends!

Sofia's 4th Grade Performance
Last night was Sofia's 4th grade performance and she was so excited to sing and play the recorder. She's been singing the songs to us of the past few days, but wouldn't tell us much about the actual performance. Unfortunately, CK was in Houston for work and wasn't able to make it. The girls and I ate dinner early and actually got to the school around 6:35pm so Olivia and I could pick out good seats and Sofia could meet with her classmates and Mrs. Neugent, the music teacher, in the gym where they would pick out their recorders and prepare for their performance. Olivia and I picked seats in the 3rd row on the right and another mom suggested I ask Sofia where she would be standing on the stage. On my way to the gym, I ran into one of Sofia's friends who told me Sofia would be standing in the front row to the right, so our seats would be perfect. Olivia found her best friend, Hannah, who was sitting with her mom on the far side of the stage and they ended up hanging out together and goofing off. They are crazy little girls together but enjoy each other so much. Casey and I texted each other since I couldn't see her and she said the girls planned to sit at her feet to watch the performance.
All the 4th graders filed into the cafeteria and up on the stage and Sofia was front row on the right hand side! My seat was perfect and she saw me as she walked into the room. They all looked great in their yellow t-shirts and jeans and looked so great. Mrs. Neugent introduced the class and explained that they have spent the year learning the recorder, as well as traditional Texas songs. They got started and sounded terrific! Mrs. Neugent does such a great job of leading the kids through the songs and recorder pieces. I don't remember learning how to play the recorder, but Mrs. Neugent said most 3rd or 4th graders across the country learn it. They sang Texas, Our Texas, I'm Going to Leave Old Texas Now, The Eyes of Texas, and Salute to Texas Medley (Yellow Rose of Texas and Deep in the Heart of Texas). Between the songs, they played Walk Like a Mummy, AAA, Perry the Sheep, Baba Ohh La La, Hot Cross Buns and Sir Binko Larch Leads the March on their recorders. The recorder song AAA included a rap in between playing and it was absolutely fantastic! Sofia got really into it and was awesome! She's such a great performer and really loved it!
The performance ended around 7:45pm and we headed to Baskin-Robbins for ice cream to celebrate after chatting with several friends and their parents. The ice cream was just perfect and really was delicious! We each enjoyed our single scoop of ice cream before heading home for bed. Such a fun performance!

Sofia at 9 1/2 Years Old!
Sofia is halfway to being in her double digits as a big 10 year old! Sofia is 83.6 lbs and is 56 1/4 inches tall and has grown 1 1/4 inches since she turned 9. She's just growing and growing up so fast! Sofia remains very much in love with reading, especially if there are dragons, magic or include any kind of fantasy storyline. She absolutely loves reading anything by Rick Riordan, especially his Percy Jackson series. She has literally read that series of five thick books at least 15 times in an endless loop. She still enjoys picking up one of the Harry Potter books too and reading it, usually starting at a part that interests her most, like the Hippogriff or some other magical creature. As much as she loves to read and always has a book in front of her, she sticks to many of the same books and would prefer to reread something she knows she loves instead of something she hasn't yet read. As many parents struggle with their child wanting to look at an iPad or iPhone all the time, we have the same struggle with books. Sofia literally reads every chance she gets and tries to sneak her book onto her lap during meals so she can eat and continue reading. She has said she plans to be a writer, although she also wants to be a scientist. If she becomes a writer, she wants to write books that include mythical creatures. For Christmas her Grandpa and Grandma gave her a book that includes the first two-and-a-half sentences and several blank pages to create and write the story based off the few sentences provided. She absolutely loves it and has come up with several great stories that have unusual and unexpected endings. She also has an "imagination journal" that she writes her stories in and is currently working on a story about Buddy who becomes a superhero named Fluffy McFee and rescues cats from trees. Once she gets an idea for a story, she will spend all her time writing and wants to read it to us as soon as she's completed a page or another thought. We often talk about what Sofia will become and do with her life and the possibilities are endless.
Sofia continues to enjoy school and really loves her teacher, Ms. Murray who is very sweet and a great teacher. She really loves her math teacher, Mrs. Grant, who is one of the best teachers I think Sofia has ever had. Science, writing and spelling come so easily to her and she has a little difficulty with math but it seems like she really understands the concepts and just starts to question herself. She gets very good grades in every subject and class time is boring at times to her. She doesn't love getting up in the morning, but is very good at waking up with her alarm at 6:20am, getting dressed and ready and is usually down reading on the couch before I even make it out of our bedroom. She's always in a good mood and ready for the day. She does ask me occasionally why I don't home school her since she feels like she'd be better at learning from reading and taking her own time. She would absolutely love to be able to sit at home in her pjs with a pile of books in front of her!
She and Olivia started gymnastics at the beginning of November and she is really loving it. I wish I'd signed Sofia up when she was younger, but she's already made huge strides. Olivia was begging to start gymnastics and I didn't think Sofia would be interested in it, but took them both with me to sign up at Sunbelt. When we got there, Sofia asked if she could also take gymnastics. The first few classes were a little hard to watch since they really didn't know what they were doing and were both timid and awkward, but now that they have been going for nearly 2 months they are really learning and improving! For Christmas Santa brought them a trampoline (which resembles a medium-sized UFO in our backyard) and they spend hours every day on it. It's really helped them get strong and to feel more comfortable with tumbling, flipping and somersaults. More than their gymnastic abilities, I really love how much they enjoy it and how much stronger they both have become. Both girls continue to take piano with Mr. James here at our house and Sofia enjoys it, although now that it's gotten more complex she doesn't practice on her own like she used to do. I just signed Sofia up for the spring soccer season playing with the Pink Pirates, which will start in mid-February. She is super excited to get back out on the soccer field and is determined to score a goal. I love her enthusiasm and dedication! Both girls also participate in Run Club which happens on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:10 - 7:30am. Sofia said that her New Year's Resolution is to run faster, so we are looking into a local 5K in the spring that we can start training for together once it gets warmer.
Sofia is very particular about how she does things in certain order. After choir practice started, we went to Menchie's for frozen yogurt and since then it's just what we "have to do" every Wednesday. She also gets ideas in her mind about how she approaches everything from what she wears, how she does certain things, etc. She's really interesting like that. She likes to have her toys arranged a certain way or place her glasses in a certain place on her table. That being said, she remains pretty forgetful about things, especially her math homework that is due each Thursday. She is very focused on some things and not on other things.
Sofia still loves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and prefers them for lunch every day! She loves radishes, carrots, bell peppers, cauliflower and especially loves raw onions. She will often sneak raw onions off the cutting board when I'm cutting them up and loves them. She still loves pizza and spaghetti and salmon are her three favorite meals. She isn't as big of a fan of cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches as she once was but likes goat cheese on crackers a lot. Of course, Sofia loves her sweets and enjoys pretty much any dessert in front of her. She enjoys miso soup, edamame and California rolls and I'm excited for a time when she is willing to try another kind of sushi. As far as playing, she enjoys playing upstairs with her plastic horses and making up stories while she plays. She loves being creative, jumping on the trampoline, reenacting Star Wars fights with Brandon and Antonio on the front lawn, watching Star Wars' Clone Wars episodes and writing and reading stories. She's very creative and has a very vivid imagination! She absolutely adores her sister and loves playing with her and making up stories and games together. As sisters, they also bicker at times but they generally just enjoy each other and look forward to playing with each other.
One of Sofia's great attributes is that she really knows her own mind and doesn't get sucked into trying to please friends or anyone. She will wear any clothes that she likes without any interest in whether her top and skirt match or go together at all. When we have pointed out that her clothes don't really go together, she just shrugs her shoulders and says "Oh well, I like it." While I drove her home from a birthday party where she'd gotten a bracelet in her gift bag, she said the bracelet was really popular at school and most of the girls at school have several of them. I asked her if she liked them or wanted some of the bracelets and she said "No. I don't really see the point of wearing bracelets. They seem so unnecessary." I love it. I love that she doesn't just go along with what others do and instead really thinks about her interests and priorities. When all the other girls are talking and laughing at lunch, Sofia is completely focused on reading her book while she eats her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She just does her own thing.

Trains!!
Yesterday we went to the Dallas Area Train Show in Plano with Marco, Stacy, Antonio and Luca. We started going a few years ago when Sofia really loved trains and have kept up the tradition, although last year I completely forgot to check which weekend the train show was on and we ended up missing it. This year, we coordinated with Marco and Stacy and they drove us all in their minivan. Sofia said she didn't want to go and wanted to stay home and jump on the trampoline instead. We told her that she could do that after we returned.
We arrived and headed in to the main showroom where all of the trains and landscapes were set up. Thankfully, Sofia is now tall enough that she doesn't need to be picked up to see the train scenes, which is great since she's now 80 lbs! Olivia still needs to be lifted up for most of them, and CK ended up putting her on his shoulders and walking around so she had a great view. Sofia, who didn't even want to go to the train show ended up getting completely engrossed in each display and would walk around following one of the trains, quietly talking to herself. I'm certain she was busy making up a story but she would clam up each time I got close to her. Antonio stuck with us and Stacy and Luca explored other areas. After a while, we headed out to the courtyard so the kids could ride on the train, which they always love to do! At $5 a ride, they ended up only riding on it once, despite their protests. They did each get a really cool train-shaped whistle, which they really loved to blow.
After riding on the train, we headed inside for popcorn and then to the big room that have the garden-sized trains. They sat on the floor and watched the trains going around for awhile and then we decided it might be time to head home. We loaded up and the kids were all bummed to leave. Sofia was actually the most sad and she really wanted to stay longer or come back. Of course, she did! We headed back to our houses and drove through a really hard rain for a while, which was crazy since it was such a beautiful day until that point. Once we made it home, we decided to order pizzas and salads while the kids jumped on the trampoline. They had a great time and it was a fun way to end the day.
