Goodbye Thumb!

A week ago Sofia had an orthodontist appointment with Dr. Lewis to determine if she will need an expander on her top jaw to make room for all of her adult teeth. We originally went to an orthodontist in Southlake who comes highly recommended and who already sees a few of Sofia's classmates. He was very personable and I liked how close his office is, but decided on a second opinion with Dr. Lewis, who is located at Dr. Simpson's office in Carrollton every Tuesday. Dr. Simpson is a family friend of CK's boss, Tex, and has been seeing the girls for a few years. He is very gentle and great with the girls and is very generous about getting us in to see him. I don't love the 30-40 minute drive, but he's worth it.

So, last week the girls and I headed out to meet Dr. Lewis for the first time and although he is younger than Dr. Simpson, he has a similar friendly and easy way about him. He looked in Sofia's mouth and agreed with our first estimate that she would need an expander. He said that because she has sucked her thumb for so long, it has changed the shape of her top jaw and has caused her teeth to start to push in instead of straight down. He also said that her two front teeth, which have been coming in for well over 6 weeks have not progressed because the pressure of her thumb is causing the teeth not to drop. He said she really needs to stop sucking her thumb or he could put a bar in her mouth which would discourage her from sucking it. We have tried convincing Sofia to stop sucking her thumb and she did for a short time before Kindergarden, but soon started back up. Most recently she sucks it every night to fall asleep and a lot of the time when she's reading, watching a show, bored or tired. So, a lot of the time she has her thumb in her mouth. We've tried the liquid nail polish that tastes terrible (I tried it and it is terrible and stays in your mouth for awhile). That worked but as soon as it wore off, she would be right back to sucking it again.

Dr. Lewis told me about the importance of Sofia not sucking her thumb while the girls were busy looking at toothbrushes and stickers, so I asked him to tell her what he told me. He called her over to him and told her very kindly that she needed to stop sucking her thumb or else her teeth would need a lot of fixing, including an expander and braces. He was really very gentle and kind and Sofia listened intently. She really doesn't want an expander and I think she thinks that she can avoid it if she stops sucking her thumb now.

We left Dr. Lewis' office and without saying anything Sofia just stopped sucking her thumb! I noticed while we drove home that she read with out her thumb. Usually I have to remind her a time or two while she reads. A few days later she announced that she hadn't sucked her thumb since Dr. Lewis' appointment and she was done! She said she's hoping it means that she will not need an expander, which she is getting in a month, but we'll cross that bridge in the coming weeks. We are so proud of her!!

The thumb through the years.....

Alpine, Texas

We spent this past weekend with CK's boss, Tex and his lovely wife Vaughn, at their house in Alpine. We visited the house, which has an incredible view of Alpine and the surrounding mountains, when we visited the area during Spring Break last year. It's absolutely beautiful and so relaxing and quiet. We arrived mid-afternoon Friday after a 2 hour flight that took us through a rain storm just before we landed. Once we landed, it was lovely to step out into the 73 degree weather, despite the light rain. We drove up to Tex and Vaughn's house and settled into our rooms, putting the girls into a room with two twin beds upstairs and decided to stay in the guest room on the first floor so the girls could possibly sleep in a little longer.

Friday night we enjoyed queso and fritos, followed by roasted chicken and salad. It was all so delicious and the girls were so hungry that they both devoured their chicken and carrots, since they aren't salad eaters yet. Tex and Vaughn do not have kids, so we ate a lot later than we normally do at home but both girls were great. After dinner, Sofia read on the couch and Olivia played with the books we brought with us. We put the girls to bed around 9:45pm and they took a long time to get settled and fall asleep, probably since they both enjoyed long naps on the flight out.

On Saturday morning, the girls both woke up around 6am and crawled into bed with me as CK was just getting up to go watch the sunrise outside. After both girls fell back asleep, I joined CK for a cup of coffee outside and enjoyed the mid-70 degree weather and beautiful landscape. It's so quiet and peaceful and just very relaxing. Sofia was soon awake and Olivia shortly after, so they ran around the front yard. Tex headed out and brought back possibly the very best donuts I've ever eaten! We all ate donuts and then headed out with Vaughn and their two vizslas, Chula and Rigley, for a walk. We followed the road up toward the peak and passed two houses before the road became more like a trail. Olivia rode on CK's back while I stuck in the back of the group with Sofia and she collected rocks. There were small bright red rocks on the trail as well as other interesting finds. Sofia, as usual, took her time and really searched for just the perfect rock or rocks. I took pictures of the landscape, and just enjoyed the quiet as we walked. Once Sofia's hands were full, I put her rocks into my back pocket and told her she would have to limit her find to what she could carry. The rest of our group - Vaughn and her two dogs, CK and Olivia on his back, and Ginger, the lady who lives on the premises and takes care of their house and property - headed back toward the house and met up with Sofia and I, so we turned around and headed back. Sofia convinced Olivia to search for rocks, and soon her shorts pocket was filled with rocks too. Olivia also found a centipede which was really cool. We returned to the house and the girls washed all of their rocks and displayed them in the sun.

CK and I got organized and loaded the girls up into Tex's truck and drove toward Balmorhea State Park, where there is a fresh water spring that has been turned into a swimming pool with fish. The spring produces so much water that aqueducts were built almost 100 years ago to transport the fresh water to the nearby town for crops. It's really remarkable to see miles of aqueducts full of clear water in the middle of the desert. On our way we turned down Boy Scout Road, as suggested by Tex, and drove it just to get some new scenery. Sofia kept asking if we could go for a hike, so we decided to pull off the road and climb up a short rocky area. CK and Sofia set off and Olivia and I started up after them but were rebuffed by the thorns and stickers and turned back to sit in the truck and watch Sofia and CK climb. I took more pictures of the area and enjoyed the views. They climbed to the top pretty quickly and hung out at the top briefly before heading back toward us. We continued along the road for a while before deciding to turn around for lunch at Fort Davis. Tex had also suggested Lupita's for a good burger. We stopped there and ate with the girls getting grilled cheese sandwiches, CK the burger and I ordered a burrito.

After lunch, we continued on to Balmorhea. Once we arrived we had to sit in a car line to get into the park! Luckily we were only about six cars from the front and were told that it often gets backed up by at least 50 or more cars! After waiting 15 minutes, we were in and parking the truck. The girls changed into their swimsuits in the truck and CK and I took turns using the bathrooms near the spring-fed pool. It was rather crowded, and Sofia was in the water and swimming with the fish in no time. Olivia was a little less certain but wanted to go in to see "the mermaid." When Vaughn first suggested that we visit Balmorhea, I pulled up a video to show the girls and we were later redirected to a video of a "mermaid" swimming in the pool with the fish. She was transfixed and told CK as soon as he got home from work that there was a "real" mermaid and she saw the video! It was so sweet!

Olivia and I headed into the pool and despite the "stairs are slippery" sign, I still nearly fell and killed myself as we walked in. The stairs and bottom of the pool are covered in thin algae and it's hard to stand on, especially with a slippery little girl. The water was cool but very refreshing and Olivia wasn't interested in letting go of me or trying to put her head under the water. We weren't in long before CK and Sofia were both in with their goggles and looking at all the little fish and larger catfish. We also found another area that was less crowded and I dove into the water from the diving board, as requested by Olivia, who watched while sitting on the side wall. She was sad that she didn't get a chance to see the mermaid and I told her that the mermaid is shy and probably hiding from all the people swimming around. She didn't buy it and was upset and sad (also known as a tired 3-year old). After swimming and just lounging by the pool for about 2 hours, we headed back toward Tex and Vaughn's house. Of course, Olivia fell asleep within minutes. Sofia stayed awake and read her book. As we drove up the dirt road toward Tex and Vaughn's house, we told the girls they could unstrap from their carseats and look for wildlife. They loved it! The road to their house is rough so the maximum speed is 30 mph, which is perfect for two little girls to look for animals and giggle.

For dinner Saturday night, Tex made steaks which were divine and went with baked potatoes and salad. Delicious! We sat outside by Tex's grill and enjoyed the sunset and watched the landscape change. After dinner, I let the girls watch a video on my iPhone before putting them to bed. Sofia was so excited to get up and go for a walk again.

On Sunday morning we got up and had another fresh batch of donuts for breakfast while watching the morning unfold. We packed and and Sofia and I headed out for a walk. Olivia and CK started off with us but Olivia was immediately fussing about walking and wanted to be carried, so CK and she turned back to the house. Sofia and I had a great time walking, looking for new rocks and enjoying the sights. We also saw a snake, a few jack rabbits and a few quail. We walked for around 45 minutes before Tex, CK and Olivia arrived in Tex's truck. He took us on a drive of his property while we looked for wildlife. Sofia was dying to see a roadrunner, since she'd missed seeing the couple that we'd spotted over the weekend. Finally she saw one and it stood so still that I was able to get a few great pictures of it! We also saw a quail mom with her little baby, although I wasn't able to capture that photo as well. They blend into the grass and surrounding so well. After our wildlife tour, we loaded up our stuff and Tex took us to the airport. We took off and I captured a few photos of Tex and Vaughn's house from the air before we headed back toward home. What a fun weekend and it would be so much fun to spend a few weeks in the area to explore, hike, etc. Such a lovely part of the country.

Fossil Rim

This morning I got the girls up and headed out to visit Fossil Rim, which we haven't done in a few years. In past summers I've taken the girls to Dinosaur World and Dinosaur Valley State Park to see sauropod and theropod tracks, however, this year I decided Olivia is old enough for Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Sofia isn't that excited by dinosaurs anymore. Plus, due to all the rain we've had, the dinosaur footprints at Dinosaur Valley State Park are under water and all of the hiking trails are closed.

The drive out was so much easier now that the Chisholm Trail Parkway is complete. It took us 11/2 hours to get there and when we arrived the cloud cover was slowing clearing and it was around 80 degrees, pretty unheard of for late June! We bought our tickets and bag of animal feed and headed to our car to start our adventure. We saw Addax, Axis Deer and antelope and the girls loved feeding them. We made our way through the wildlife grounds and saw all sorts of great African and European animals, including the Gemsbok and Blackbuck. The girls enjoyed feeding the animals, but also LOVED riding in the car without seat belts, especially Olivia. Soon, they were snacking on all the food I brought: cheese sticks, granola bars, grapes and peanuts. Just before we made it to the Overlook, which is basically the halfway point, there is a steep and long downhill, which we drove down and the girls loved it. It may have been the highlight of the day.

We saw a few baby Blackbuck and their mommies and the headed up the steep hill to the overlook. Since our last visit they have greatly improved the Overlook. Now there is a full-service cafe that has a beautiful view of the wildlife below, a huge gift shop and bathrooms, and a Childrens Learning Center. We headed to the Childrens Learning Center where the girls saw giant tortoise and were able to pet a few goats and see Emu and Macaws up close. After that, we walked over to the gift shop and looked around. The girls picked out two little porcelain animal figures: one of an owl for Sofia and a sea turtle for Olivia. They were each $6 and very cute. Of course, as we walked out of the gift shop, Olivia dropped her turtle and broke off two of it's legs and we could not find them. She was devastated! I gave Sofia $10 and asked her to go inside and buy Olivia another one while I put Olivia in the car. Sofia returned with a mermaid! Olivia adores mermaids and we never even saw them on the rack so she was very happy with the new figure.

We headed back down the hill and right into the area of giraffes! We watched as the car in front of us fed the only giraffe who was interested in eating. It was fun to watch him and we took a few good photos of him. That car moved on and we moved up to feed the giraffe. Sofia fed it a handful of pellets and got slobbered on. She decided she didn't want to feed him anymore and Olivia wasn't too sure from the beginning, so I fed the giraffe a few times and he was so gentle in taking the food from my hand. They are such remarkable animals. After, we continued on our journey and ran out of food just after the giraffes, which was unfortunate since we had several zebra very interested in our food as well as some European deer. While I drove, the girls played with their owl and mermaid and made up all sorts of stories of them rescuing each other, becoming friends, etc. They enjoyed it, but once you've seen one deer or antelope, I guess you've seen them all.

A few years ago CK, Sofia and I ate at a really cute and delicious cafe on the town square in Glen Rose and I was really craving going back. We drove into town and it's gone! It apparently went out of business a three years ago and is now the home of Pie Peddlers, a place that sells pies and is apparently one of the best in Texas. So, we decided to have pie for lunch. Why not! We'd all snacked on healthy stuff and it's not like we have pie for lunch everyday! Olivia wanted a milkshake, so we went next door and ordered her a mint chocolate chip milkshake that was incredible then returned to Pie Peddlers for our slice of key lime (Sofia) and apple pie a la mode (me). Both were delicious, although I dare say that my Uncle Steve's is far superior. We decided to take a whole key lime pie home to eat over the next few days and let CK get a chance at trying it. So, we made it out of Pie Peddlers after spending $40! Yikes!

As we headed home, we passed a park called that is right next to the Paluxy River. The river level is high thanks to all the rain and there was a pretty decent current. The girls saw several people and kids swimming and wanted to stop. I parked and they changed into their swimsuits before we headed over to the river. The rocks are so big and round and seem out of place and the riverbed is fairly smooth rock instead of sand, which was interesting. The girls waded in and then splashed and soon swam around. After about 10 minutes, Sofia asked if there are any alligators in the river. Even though I assured her there aren't any alligators in the Paluxy river, Olivia headed straight for me and wanted to get out of the water! No amount of reassurance would change her mind. Sofia swam, walked all the way up to the dam area and splashed around for a bit and then headed back to where we'd entered the water. She and Olivia had a ball letting the current take them around a little bend in the river and did it over and over. Finally, I realized that I was dripping in sweat, so we headed back to our car where the girls changed into their underwear and we drove home. Of course, Olivia fell asleep within 5 minutes of being in the car and slept the entire drive home. It was a fun visit and I look forward to the time when we can rent a tent at Fossil Rim and stay for a weekend. Glen Rose is such a cute town and there really is so much to do in the area it would be fun to explore for more than a few hours.
