Following such a great Thanksgiving meal, we had a few fun things planned while they visited. On Friday morning we relaxed in the morning and then headed over to the Perot Museum to see the Space Exhibit that recently opened. We haven't been to it yet, so we were really excited to check it out with Grandpa and Grandma. We figured the day after Thanksgiving would be a perfect day to go to the museum, but were surprised by how busy it was when we arrived. We started out by going to the 3D movie about space travel and the mission to Mars. It was well done and very interesting. From there, we headed into the museum and down to the area of the museum that has temporary exhibits. The exhibit was fascinating and very well done. It focused on how space travel works, how the International Space Station stays in orbit around the earth, what astronaut's eat, what it's like to live in space and how we'll get to Mars. In the middle of the exhibit was a International Space Station exhibit that rotated, so it felt like we were actually moving. It was crazy how the motion tricked our eyes to make us feel like we were actually moving instead of the space around us moving. While it rotated, a screen talked about all that the International Space Station does.
At the very end of the exhibit, the girls took turns manipulating a metal arm to pick up a small ball and drop it into a small bucket. They both did a great job! They posed for pictures as "astronauts" and played with a model International Space Station that had doll astronauts in it. One of the most interesting exhibits was what it felt like to try to grab blocks with your hand in a glove while on earth and the moon. It was incredibly different and so difficult to grab blocks on the moon. There was also an exhibit of peanut butter jars from each planet and how much they weighed on each. So, the peanut butter jar was light on the moon but very heavy on Jupiter. It explained that the gravitation pull of each planet is related to the planet's mass. It was great!
We left the exhibit and the girls played in the kid's play area for a while as we sat and relaxed. Sofia loves to organize all of the vegetables in the grocery area and makes sure that they are all in the right place. Olivia ran around the kid's play area and ended up giving us each a different colored daisy. Olivia also loves going into the Dallas city scape and playing there too. Sofia had all the vegetables organized and we headed out to go home. The girls played on the big frogs, which actually light up at night. We've never been to the museum that late, so we've never seen the frogs lit up. It's really cool. After the girls were done playing, we headed toward home and decided to eat...

Happy Thanksgiving 2017
This morning started out crisp and sunny in the mid-30s with my usual walk to the soccer fields with Buddy. It was fantastic! We had the whole path and fields to ourselves and it was quiet and still and a perfect way to start the morning thinking of all the things I'm thankful for in my life. Thanksgiving really is the best holiday - it marries family with favorite foods and thankfulness without the stress of gifts and expectations. CK Sr. and Connie arrived yesterday afternoon and it's exciting to host our first Thanksgiving since we were married in 2005! We hosted CK's family the Thanksgiving after Olivia was born in 2011, but we bought everything cooked and prepared from Central Market. This year, we planned out the entire meal and made everything, including all the pie crusts, from scratch! Since we only have one oven, it does take a bit of preparing and Olivia and I made the cranberry sauce on Tuesday and I made the sweet potatoes, gravy, and potato and celery root mash yesterday. It will all need to be reheated, but at least it's made. CK also made the pecan pie and pumpkin pie yesterday and made the apple pie this morning before the turkey went into the oven.
Buddy and I returned to the house around 8:15 and CK was busy peeling and cutting apples for his pie. After he put his beautiful apple pie into the oven, he got busy making biscuits which he put into the side oven. Meanwhile, I set the table for our Thanksgiving feast while Connie made up the scrambled eggs and bacon. Olivia set the table for our breakfast and then woke Sofia up from her frigid sleep. Sofia has been sleeping with her window open a few inches and her room must be in the 40s! She loves it! I don't know how she stands it, but she loves covering up in a pile of blankets and sleeping.
Breakfast was amazing! We enjoyed CK's famous biscuits, scrambled eggs and bacon while we smelled the apple pie baking! After breakfast, we put the turkey in the oven and set our timer for 3.5 hours! We still needed to make our brussel sprouts with pancetta and balsamic glaze, green bean casserole and Aunt Shirl's delicious sausage-apricot stuffing. First, we decided to take a rest by the fire and relax for a few minutes. The girls were busy jumping on the trampoline and running around pretending to be dragons. In the past few months they have rediscovered their love of the episodes of "How to Train Your Dragon" so they pretend to be dragons pretty much all the time. The girls also took turns playing their piano recital music for Grandma. Sofia is playing "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" while Olivia is playing "Deck the Halls." Sofia has worked really hard every day to get her piece down, while Olivia hasn't been as diligent but thinks it "sounds good," although she has a lot to practice!
I showered and got dressed and then headed back out to the kitchen to make our sides. I made Aunt Shirl's stuffing, which I've helped her make for years. It really turns out so yummy. Once that was made, I worked on the green beans and finished up with the brussel sprouts, which are really very easy. CK and I headed up the potato and celery root mash and the gravy. Sofia and CK then took our sweet potatoes and stuffing over to Marco and Stacy's oven to reheat them since they have two ovens and plan to celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow since Marco is working today. It really was a huge help!
Once the sides returned from Stacy's oven, the turkey was ready and we had to put everything on their serving plates. CK carved the turkey, which not only looked beautiful but also tasted delicious and was super moist! Based on several recommendations, we decided to brine the turkey for just over 24 hours and then slide pats of butter mixed with fresh herbs under the breast skin before putting it in the oven. It worked out perfectly! Not bad for the first turkey in 15 years! After the turkey was carved, we headed to the dining room table, which I set up earlier that morning, and sat down for our Thanksgiving meal (after taking several photos). We passed around the dishes and were all eating in no time. It really was all delicious! Once we were done, it honestly didn't even look like we'd eaten anything from the serving dishes! So, I guess we have a lot of leftovers in our future.
We moved all the dirty dishes and food to the kitchen and were ready for desert! CK had his pecan pie, pumpkin pie with shortbread pecan crust and apple pie with vanilla ice cream on the sideboard and was soon cutting pieces for everyone. All the pies looked perfect and they tasted even better. He did a great job and they were the perfect end to a great meal. We sat around and talked for a while before Connie, CK and I headed to the kitchen to do the dishes. Connie washed while either CK or I dried and then put everything away. Just as we finished up, I actually headed to the airport to pick up Mitzi from her trip to visit her mom. It was nice to catch up with her on our drive home.
After I dropped her at her house, I returned home where everyone was hanging around relaxing. The fire was still going from this morning and it was great to sit by the fire, browse emails and the internet and just relax after such a fun day full of great food.

ICE!
Yesterday the girls and I went to ICE! at the Gaylord Texan. Actually, we haven't been to it in a few years since our last visit was on a Friday afternoon and we ended up standing in line for at least 2 hours and then froze inside and I think one or both of the girls either needed to go to the bathroom and/or started crying because they were hungry. Anyway, we left swearing we would never be back. But, I do think it's pretty amazing and I figured it would be a fun thing to do over the Thanksgiving week. I was also hopeful that if we visited early that it wouldn't be as busy. Since Grandpa and Grandma planned to arrive on Wednesday, we bought tickets for Monday thinking it might be the best (and least busy) day to go. CK said he didn't want to go with us given the last visit, so I bought tickets for the three of us and tickets for the girls to go sledding on the snow mountain that is next to ICE! We've never done the sledding before and I wasn't even sure Olivia would decided to do it or not, since she tends to waiver on things like that.
We made it to the Gaylord Texas just after noon, as our tickets were for 1pm. It was actually pretty crazy in the parking lot, so we were a bit nervous that it was crazy inside too. We parked and headed inside the hotel. We stopped and enjoyed the Christmas decorations and watched the trains for a bit before heading on to ICE! Thankfully the wait wasn't too bad, although we were all bundled up and ready to go into the cold so we were all soon very hot. We slowly moved toward the entrance and the big blue coats they were handing out. Of course, the girls started arguing over the green handmade hat my Mom made since they both wanted to wear it. It was made for Sofia, but it really fits Olivia much better now and she decided to wear it, which caused Sofia to protest and want to wear it herself! We finally worked it all out just as we arrived at the blue coats. We each put on our coats and got bundled up once again. We had to stand in line again for a short time but were soon ushered into the ICE! exhibit. This year ICE! featured "The Night Before Christmas" and was very well done, as always. It was breathtakingly cold as we first entered the exhibit but we actually became comfortable as we wondered through the exhibit!
The coolest room had Santa in his sleigh with his reindeer and was really well done! This year, ICE! included a bar inside where adults could get an alcoholic drink...and then walk around with it. So, we had to dodge adults with their drinks for the rest of the exhibit. Olivia started getting cold and I told her we were over halfway through. Sofia, as usual, wasn't cold at all. Once we were done looking at Santa, we moved into the room with a Christmas tree and slides, but for some reason the slides were closed! We walked through the room - after a few photos - and made it to the last few rooms. By this time, Olivia was done and ready to go and Sofia was actually starting to get cold. We went through the final room which is the clear ice nativity and is so beautiful! Once we were done, we headed out of the cold of ICE! Olivia was shedding a few tears by then, so it was a perfect time to leave. We took off and returned our coats and wanted to get hot cocoa, but the line was crazy long, so we agreed to get some after. We bought our "official" ICE! photo and then headed to the ice slides. The ice slides were crazy busy and we stood in line for probably 20 minutes without moving before the girls asked if we "had to do this." We decided to go for a snack and hot cocoa break instead of standing in line for who knows how long.
The girls ordered hot cocoas and I got a coffee and we got a container of cheese and crackers as well as a hummus and pretzel packet. The girls loved it and it was what we all needed probably before we arrived at ICE! I think they were much hungrier than I thought they were, so after their snack they were different girls entirely! We snacked and enjoyed people watching inside the Gaylord. It was just as fun snacking and talking as it was going through ICE! Once we had enjoyed our snacks and drinks, we wondered through the Gaylord and took a few more pictures. Once we were done, we headed to the parking garage. Unfortunately, getting out of the parking garage was a complete nightmare! It took us nearly an hour to get out of the garage and headed home! It was frustrating, especially considering the parking cost $20! It seems they could streamline that process. We headed home and the girls told their Papa all about ICE! It was a fun visit, despite the frustration of the parking garage.
