This afternoon I decided we needed to carve our pumpkins or else we likely wouldn't get a chance to carve them. Sofia got home from school and Olivia was still sleeping, so I figured it might be a good time to get started since I can't imagine Olivia being that focused on the actual carving. We decided to carve in the front yard since our backyard is in the shade by the afternoon and is pretty cool. I drew the face onto the two pumpkins as Sofia described what she wanted. Then, we went to work. I cut out the eyes, nose and smile while Sofia cleaned out the insides. Both pumpkins were pretty thick so it was a lot harder than I expected and also took a lot longer!
Sofia, of course, loved her job. She not only cleaned out the insides and seeds, but made up some elaborate story about it all. I had to convince her that the seeds needed to go into the trash bag and not become part of a grander story spread throughout the yard. We were nearly done when Olivia finally woke up. She was a bit sleepy and disoriented when she first saw the pumpkins but was interested in figuring out exactly what Sofia was doing and what was inside those crazy things. Otherwise, she didn't seem to have missed out on the fun that much. We finished up and set up our pumpkins so they could be seen from the road. That night we added votives to the pumpkins and Sofia especially loved it! I think Olivia did too, but mainly because Sofia was so impressed. The pumpkins really turned out cute!
