Off to Durango, Colorado!

We headed to Durango, Colorado on Sunday morning, after dropping Buddy off at Marco and Stacy's house. He was really bummed he wasn't going with us on our adventure (he knows when he sees the packing bags come out of the closet that something is up), but loves going to their house and eating all their dogs' food so he was fine after he ran inside the house. We originally planned to leave on Monday, but we would have too strong of a head wind. As it was, our trip took just over four hours. For a change, we had both girls sit in the back seats and I sat with CK upfront, which worked out relatively well. They both wore their headsets, so we put them on "isolate" so they could talk to each other but wouldn't talk over the radio or interrupt CK. They played together, colored in their coloring books, read, relaxed and snacked. About two hours into the flight, Olivia came up and sat on my lap and fell asleep while Sofia stretched out on the back seat and fell asleep and slept until we landed in Durango. It was good for both girls to nap, especially Olivia who started to get a squeaky voice on Saturday. She doesn't feel "sick" and nothing hurts, but her voice is really off. The four hours went by quickly and we enjoyed peanuts, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made that morning by CK, granola bars, bananas and orange San Pellagrinos. Delicious. Most of the flight was flat and boring (over Texas) but once we were in New Mexico and Colorado, the snow covered mountains and peaks were amazing! Really breathtaking (and very close).

Once we landed in Durango, we loaded up our rented SUV and headed for town, about 20 minutes away. It's such unusual terrain and quite beautiful. Although the thermostat said it was in the 50s, it feels much warmer and very comfortable outside. We parked by The Strater Hotel, a beautiful historic town right in the middle of Durango and checked in. We have adjoining rooms at the far end of a hall, which is perfect and the girls love having their own space as much as we do. We unpacked and settled in for a bit before walking around Durango and checking out the restaurant options and shops. We ended up eating at Fired Up!, a wood fired pizza restaurant in the block next to our hotel. CK and I split a white pizza with prosciutto which was excellent and the girls had a basic cheese pizza, which they loved. It was the perfect meal after our flight. We continued to walk around and we found a great little book store, Maria's Bookshop. Of course, Sofia "had" to go inside and the girls founds a great little corner in the kids' section and made themselves at home while they browsed.

We returned to our room and the girls watched a few episodes of Clone Wars, their new favorite while CK and I read in our room. CK put the girls to bed, although they didn't fall asleep for awhile since they both had napped so long in the plane, but they eventually fell asleep ready for our first full day in Durango.
