Saturday was the Pink Pirates first spring soccer game! The girls have a one hour practice on Wednesdays after school and it's the same group of fun girls plus one new girl. Sofia looked forward to her game and especially spending the hour or so with her friends. In past seasons, parents have sat or stood on the same side of the field as the team, but this year both teams are next to each other on one side of the field with all parents on the other side. Honestly, it's a great policy since the girls would be distracted by younger siblings or just want to talk to their parents and not focus on the game.
We all arrived a little early so Sofia could warm up and Olivia and I headed off to the side of a field so she could go crazy kicking her soccer ball. Sofia's game started and it's obvious that the girls on both teams have improved and gotten faster. This year, there are rotating goalies (so every girl gets a chance to play the position) and they are teaching the idea of positions with a focus on passing the ball. Sofia was placed in the defense position and was a bit timid but would try to get to the ball when it came her way. At one point she did a great job of stopping the ball and looked over to CK and I. We both were cheering and clapping for her and she got a big smile on her face! She then really started to get more confident and really started to go after the ball a lot more. In fact, I think I actually took more photos of her with the ball in this game than the entire last season! Ultimately our team lost (even though we don't keep track of the score, technically) but the girls played well and had fun. After, the girls enjoyed cupcakes and then the four of us headed off to Trio for lunch. A very fun day and Sofia was so pleased with how she'd played!
Our soccer player on the run!
Olivia checks out a bug (she calls all bugs "ants" and can spot them better than anyone!)
